After half an hour of dominating possession, Tottenham Hotspur have fallen behind at the Reebok on a goal Harry Redknapp will deride his defense for granting. Fabrice Muamba forced a turnover deep in Spurs' half, with the transition leading to Kevin Davies' 31st minute opener.
Bolton Wanderers 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur: Fabrice Muamba Exploits Sandro, Creates Kevin Davies Opener
The play started innocuously enough, with Sandro standing with the ball at his feet, facing his own goal from 30 yards out. Fabrice Muamba surged from his deep midfield position to poke the ball off the Brazilian's feet. When William Gallas went out to play the ball, Kevin Davies was left open in the middle. Though the new England international appeared in an offside position, Younes Kaboul's delay in responding allowed Davies the uncontested shot from 19 yards out. The shot went into Gomes's left-side netting, putting the Trotters up.
The goal is Davies' third of the season, but Muamba's contribution is bound to be overlooked and underrated. Having improved dramatically over the last season-plus, the former Arsenal and Birmingham City midfielder has become the linchpin to Bolton's midfield. Not normally known for creating opportunities, Muamba was responsible for Bolton's first goal.
