Kevin Davies is making his case for player of the week, and while I normally think it annoying to give penalty kick conversions equal weight in goal totals, this one was a beaut. With his second goal of the match in the 76th minute, Davies has Bolton up three, sealing what will be the Trotters' third victory of the season.
Bolton Wanderers 3-0 Tottenham Hotspur: Kevin Davies Penalty Kick Puts Spurs Down Three
Let's start with the foul. A ball played for Lee Chung-Yong in the middle of the box led to Benoit Assou-Ekotto running through the back of the Bolton winger. Though Younes Kaboul complained to referee Chris Foy, it was a training tape penalty call, giving Davies the opportunity for his brace.
The conversion was both clever and perfect. Tottenham goalkeeper Gomes guessed correctly, diving to his left, but Davies’ chipped shot was both too slow and too high for the Brazilian to stop. As Gomes was landing, the ball was crossing the line into the top right of goal, giving Bolton a 3-0 lead.
For Davies, that’s two goals and an assist in what may be one of the more memorable victories in recent Trotters’ history. The match day is still young, but Davies has made a strong, early claim for player of the week.
