Roman Pavlyuchenko is a riddle wrapped in an enigma stuffed in a Russian doll: A world class talent, a distinct combination of physical gifts and technique, but often unmotivated and passive. But there are moments when you open all those dolls and find brilliance in the middle. That's exactly what happened in the 87th minute at the Reebok.
Bolton Wanderers 3-2 Tottenham Hotspur: Roman Pavlyuchenko Brilliance Pulls Spurs Within One
A cross played into a crowded Bolton area came out to Pavlyuchenko, looming in the left side of the area. Why was one of the tallest players on the pitch there instead of contesting the ball? Who knows? Who cares after what followed: a left-footed volley from a sharp angle that splashed the left side of Jussi Jaaskelainen’s net, bringing Spurs within one goal of a remarkable comeback.
It was an astounding display of technique, but as with every goal, there is a B plot. Jasskelainen was scurrying to get back in position after coming off his line to play the cross. In addition, Peter Crouch was along the goal line and screened the `keeper. Jaaskelainen never sufficiently say the shot. The only reason Crouch was allowed that position was because Kevin Davies, in possibly his only mistake of the match, was standing on the line, keeping Crouch onside.
Regardless, it was a brilliant goal from one of the most confounding and talented players in world football. Roman Pavlyuchanko pulls Spurs within one.
