All five Rapids penalty takers scored during the shootout and Brian Carroll missed in the Crew's final attempt as Colorado won a playoff series for the first time since 2006.
Major League Soccer Playoffs, Leg 2: Rapids Win In Penalty Shootout
Conor Casey, Macoumba Kandji, Jeff Larentowicz, Claudio Lopez and Julien Baudet all scored for the Rapids. Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum did not come close to stopping any of those shots, except for one. Gruenebaum actually got a hand on Kandji's shot, but it deflected in off the goal post.
The first four Crew penalty takers scored easily as well, but Carroll’s shot was shanked badly and sailed over the crossbar.
This is just the fourth time a playoff series has gone to penalty shootout and first since 2006. The road team has emerged victorious in three of those.
Shootout result
