Twenty minutes into the second half, Tottenham Hotspur finally broke through against Sunderland. However, the lead lasted but two minutes, with mistakes at the back gifting the Black Cats an equalizer.
Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Sunderland: Rafael Van Der Vaart, Asamoah Gyan Trade Goals
First, Spurs goal. In the 6th minute, Tottenham applied their typical Crouch-to-Van der Vaart formula. Gareth Bale floated a cross for the far post. Crouch headed it down. Van der Vaart converted, though Spurs added a new trick to this goal. With Crouch’s knock-down seeing a high bounce for Van der Vaart, the Dutch international appeared to use his right arm to trap the ball before turning into his shot.
Two minutes later, Spurs defense decided to equalize, as William Gallas and Younes Kaboul failed to deal with a ball deflected to the back line. The ball rolled through them, allowing Asamoah Gyan to score his fourth goal in three league starts.
Now in the 74th minute, Tottenham remains tied with Sunderland, 1-1.
