I called it, didn’t I? I figured the little Dutch Canadian would have a serious impact on the match. In the 28th minute, Jonathan de Guzman has equalized for Mallorca with an absolutely stunning goal from just outside the edge of the penalty area, worthy of Sportscenter. It came out of almost nowhere with Villarreal having been the better team for the entire match and Mallorca struggling to create chances.
Villarreal Vs. Mallorca: Jonathan de Guzman Stunner Levels The Match, Villarreal Strike Back Through A Penalty
During a Mallorca attack, central striker Pierre Webo drifted out wide to collect the ball and crossed towards the center of the box. The ball fell perfectly for de Guzman who smacked a right footed volley past Diego Lopez. It was an absolute stunner that even the announcers couldn’t believe. I think the color guy just let out a giant yelp, I certainly didn’t hear any words.
Mallorca’s joy was short lived, though, as Villarreal were granted a penalty kick in the 35th minute. Off of a direct free kick, Pierre Webo, who was standing in the wall, handled the ball. He was shown a yellow card despite extensive protest from the Mallorca players and the penalty kick was converted by Giuseppe Rossi. The penalty and card was slightly harsh on Webo, but no one can say that Villarreal don’t deserve to have a lead. Additionally, sticking your arm out when you’re in a wall is just silly.
In addition to the two goals in this match to take the scoreline to 2-1 Villarreal, Levante have equalized to tie up the score 1-1 against Athletic Bilbao.
