A furious few minutes by Aston Villa to begin the second half paid off as Gabby Agbonlahor nudged the ball over the goal line to give the visitors a 1-0 lead over Wigan Athletic at DW Stadium. The Villans have just one win away from home on the campaign, but find themselves in good position to take three points from this one and put Wigan deeper into the relegation fight.
Wigan Vs. Aston Villa: Gabby Agbonlahor Puts Villa Ahead
Villa's move began when Darren Bent, tracking back in his own end played a simple pass to Ashley Young in space. From there, the speedy Young went on a sensational run over half the field before unleashing a shot that Ali- Al-Habsi did well to tip over. The ensuing corner was again goal bound, but the deflected header was blocked out for a second corner kick. With a third chance, Villa pounced when a back post ball was met by Carlos Cuellar, forcing a great save by Al-Habsi. The rebound was left in front of goal though and Agbonlahor found his way through the traffic to nudge the ball over the line with his head.
Wigan tried to respond a minute later, but Brad Friedel was quick off of his line to cover the ball. Some more possession in the attacking third for Wigan led to nothing and Villa continues to hold onto their one goal lead.
