Nearly left for dead in their fixture against Aston Villa after falling behind 2-0, Wigan Athletic finally got a break to get within a goal of the Villans at 2-1. Having knocked the ball around easily for most of the match and carrying the play to Villa with the exception of a short period to begin the second half, Wigan had nothing to show for it because of a lack of creativity in the final third. Instead of finding creativity though, they found luck.
Wigan Vs. Aston Villa: Wigan Deflects Their Way To Within A Goal
With a square ball played to him 25 yards away, James McCarthy turned to face goal and unleashed a shot that had pace, but was low and looked as if it was heading for a rather simple save by Brad Friedel. Just then, the ball struck James Collins and headed for the corner of the goal. Friedel was completely wrong-footed by the deflection and the ball comfortably found the netting, much to the delight of the crowd at DW Stadium.
Wigan now have 10 minutes left to find an equalizer and a point. Villa's second away win of the season is in jeopardy and Wigan can see a valuable point to put them even on points with 17th place Birmingham City.
