The insane world we were occupying where Newcastle United had both been tabled and rejected a £35 million bid for Andy Carroll has been destroyed. Replacing it is an only slightly more sane world where Liverpool has secured an agreement with the Magpies, leaving the 22-year-old England international en route to the North West to settle personal terms with the Reds.
Newcastle United, Handed Transfer Request, Accept Liverpool’s £35 Million Bid For Andy Carroll
That's how, within minutes, we went from Newcastle defiantly resisting the Liverpool raid to this, two tweets within six minutes from The Times' Ben Smith, with Liverpool having since confirmed that terms have been agreed. Still, Smith's posts help clarify the sequence of events that led to Carroll's Anfield move:
Andy Carroll submits formal transfer request which #nufc accept #lfc
Shortly after Smith’s tweets, word of Liverpool’s confirmation broke, with the Guardian publishing confirmation near 5:30 p.m. England time:
#Liverpool agree Andy Carroll fee. Player now set to discuss personal terms http://bit.ly/dYonoW #nufc
Based on other reports being seen online, Carroll is on a private jet flying him from Tyne- to Merseyside. There the striker, already sidelined with a thigh injury, is expected to undergo a perfunctory medical with an eye toward being a Liverpool play by day’s end.
Carroll has scored 33 of his 34 career goals with Newcastle, his only other tally coming during a loan stint with Preston three seasons ago. The Gateshead man recently received his first cap with the senior national team. His 11 league goals this season place him third in the Premier League.
