When certain Liverpool fans started burning what were once their prized Torres #9 jerseys, I think the reaction was mostly sadness. Many of us don't see the need for an out-of-control over-emotional response to this sort of thing, and other Reds fans across the internet decried the burning of a shirt with Liverpool's badge on it. No matter how you look at it, shirt burning doesn't reflect too well on the mental state of the burner.
Newcastle United, Ex-Andy Carroll Fans Want In On That Sweet Shirt-Burning Action
Liverpool weren't the only club to lose a legend, however. While Fernando Torres broke the British transfer record to head to champions Chelsea for £50M, it was actually the second time in a day that said record had fallen. For it was the transfer of 21 year-old striker Andy Carroll from Newcastle United to Liverpool which made it happen. Like Torres, Carroll handed in a transfer request. Like Torres, his club was 'reluctant' to sell their icon. Unlike Torres, Carroll departed in rather more dubious circumstances, with whispers that the 'transfer request' was forced upon the striker by a club which wanted to maintain its image but couldn't say no to £35M.
If Newcastle wanted to ensure Carroll took the public relations hit rather than the fans, well, uh... good job:
Shirt burning is embarrassing behaviour, but I think this one just takes the cake. Nice work, Newcastle ‘fan’. At least the idiots burning the Torres jerseys actually managed to set theirs on fire.
