One down. One to go. Liverpool has a new striker (as they wait for their previous one to leave).
Liverpool FC, Andy Carroll Agree To Five-And-A-Half Year Deal, Completes Transfer From Newcastle United
Andy Carroll, the subject of a club record £35 million fee agreed to earlier today, is Kenny Dalglish's new number nine. The 22-year-old English international has agreed to a five year deal, according to Liverpool's website.
The deal was hashed out over the last 24 hours, with Liverpool looking to replace Fernando Torres. As it became more apparent that Torres could not be kept, Liverpool launched a late raid for the Magpies' leading scorer. Initial bids were rejected before Carroll handed-in a transfer request, shortly after which Newcastle agreed to terms.
Carroll signs a five-and-a-half year deal at Anfield and will wear the nine shirt. He joins Luis Suaréz as Liverpool’s new attacker, the Uruguayan completing his move from Ajax today.
Here is Liverpool’s full statement, as distributed on their web site just before the transfer window closed:
