Hamburg sporting director Frank Arnesen has announced that he will take over as the club’s manager effective immediately. The appointment is only temporary however until the club is able to find a permanent replacement for Michael Oenning during the international break.

Oenning was fired on September 19, and assistant Rodolfo Cardoso was named as the caretaker manager. He was in charge for two matches, including a 2-1 victory away to Stuttgart. Cardoso does not have a coaching license, and the German Football Association (DFB) only allows a 15 day grace period in these situations. Arnesen received his coaching license in 2002 while he was the sporting director at PSV. Cardoso will remain as an assistant under Arnesen, and it is expected that he will have a direct say in the way the team is run until the new manager is appointed.

According to Bild, Hamburg has already come to an agreement of 3.5 years with FC Basel manager Thorsten Fink. The only issue is Fink currently has a contract in Basel until the summer of 2013. It is expected that the ex-Bayern Munich man will make the move to the Imtech Arena in January. Fink currently has Basel on top of a UEFA Champions League group that includes Manchester United, Benfica, and Oțelul Galați.
