Chile Vs. Peru, CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying: Entertaining Game Ends 4-2 To Chile

Chile vs. Peru at the Estadio Monumental was always going to be an absolute blast of a football match, and the two teams failed to disappoint in an enthralling 4-2 win for the hosts, who went up 2-0 early and then 3-0 shortly afterwards only to be pegged back by a fairly enterprising Peru, who gave the Alexis Sanchez-less favourites a torrid time in the second half in particular.

Chile are known for their exciting, expansive play, so naturally they took a first minute lead on a set piece, defender Walder Ponce nodding a corner kick past Raul Fernandez for a 1-0 lead. Fifteen minutes later, a tap in by Juan Vargas made it 2-0, and although Peru threatened intermittently (and hit the woodwork twice) they couldn't make the breakthrough before the half ended. Chile once again earned an early goal after the teams came back out with Gary Medel scoring a long-range effort two minutes after the interval, but this time the visitors responded, cutting the lead back to two via Claudio Pizarro.

A neat Jefferson Farfan header made it 3-2 and the game even more interesting, but that state of affairs lasted approximately four nanoseconds before Fernandez clattered Jorge Valdivia in the box, leaving Humberto Suazo to slot home the penalty to reestablish a two-goal cushion. Despite several decent chances for both teams afterwards, including a William Chiroque effort that rattled Claudio Bravo's crossbar as the clock ticked over into injury time, the game would remain 4-2 and Chile would emerge with three vital points. Excellent game.
