It's been a long time since Chelsea looked as good as they did on Wednesday against Racing Genk in UEFA Champions League action. Some of that can be chalked up to the opponent. Genk doesn't have the quality to hang with Chelsea and certainly not with as many injuries as they currently have, but the Blues still looked fantastic and the scoreboard showed it in a 5-0 shellacking of their Belgian visitors at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea Vs. Racing Genk, 2011 UEFA Champions League: Blues Cruise To 5-0 Win
Within 10 minutes Chelsea were in front. Raul Meireles struck from 20 yards and the Blues had the opener. Not long after Fernando Torres got involved when he gathered a good pass from Frank Lampard, got in on goal and slotted his shot past the keeper to double the Chelsea lead. It was just the start of a fantastic match for Meireles, who then crossed for a Torres header that made it 3-0. Branislav Ivanovic headed home a Florent Malouda free kick just before the halftime whistle and the Blues led 4-0. Torres almost got his hat trick in the second half, but his shot from a yard out was saved. The rebound did fall to Salomon Kalou though, who finished into the open net to give the match its 5-0 final scoreline.
The win puts Chelsea atop Group E with seven points, but Bayer Leverkusen are right on their heels with six. Genk is in last place with just one point, while Valencia is third in the group with two points.
