Things went easily for Jaguares Chiapas at home on Saturday night, as Pumas UNAM’s terrible road form continued. Jaguares are now all but locked into a Liguilla place going into the final matchday, while Pumas will now need a result on the last day to stay in the top eight, thanks to Jaguares’ 4-0 demolition of their visitors in Chiapas.
Jaguares Chiapas Vs. Pumas UNAM, 2011 Apertura: Full Time, Hosts Roll In 4-0 Win
Most of the damage was done in the first half hour of the game, allowing Jaguares to sit back for the majority of the match. Jackson Martinez grabbed his team’s first goal in the 10th minute, tapping in a rebound after Alejandro Palacios saved, but could not control a shot from Christian Valdez. Palacios would find himself beat again just 10 minutes later, as he allowed Edgar Andrade to beat him near post with a direct free kick that put Jaguares up 2-0 in the 20th minute.
Martinez drew a penalty six minutes later and converted to make it 3-0 in the 27th, all but ending the match. Dario Veron was the man who gave away the penalty, and while Martinez dived to win it, Veron stuck his leg up towards Martinez while lying on the ground, and therefore probably deserved to have the call go against him.
The rest of the match was quiet, but the previous goal scorers would combine for a fourth goal in the 88th minute, with Martinez setting up Andrade for his second. Pumas never really got involved in the match, and Jaguares deserved to win by the wide margin in the boxscore.
