After 25 minutes at Goodison Park Everton holds a very much deserved 1-0 lead over Sunderland. The Toffees have been far superior to the Black Cats, knocking the ball around at will and challenging the Sunderland back line time and time again. On the flip side, Sunderland haven't been able to keep the ball for more than a few seconds let alone threaten goal.
Everton Vs. Sunderland: Black Cats Almost Undeservedly Equalize
Everton's dominance is what made Sunderland's near equalizer so amazing. The Black Cats pushed forward and kept the ball for more than two passes, a real accomplishment for them in this match, and then found a bit of brilliance. Asamoah Gyan's beautiful backheel found Ahmed Elohamady who fed a waiting Stephane Sessegnon. The man from Benin took the space and fired a rocket at the goal that it appeared Tim Howard got the slightest touch on before it caromed off of the underside of the bar and away.
Now through 30 minutes Sunderland may have found their feet again. Sessegnon’s blast off of the bar was Sunderland’s only but of control all match and they almost capitalized on it. Even with Sunderland’s bit of misfortune though it would be a shame for this match to go even and Everton not hold a lead they so thoroughly deserve.
