On the back of being hit with a misconduct charge following his comments about referee Massimo Busacc's performance during Arsenal's 3-1 loss to Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Tuesday, Arsene Wenger has added fuel to the fire in his denial of the charges levelled against him. On the one hand, Wenger is correct in that the decision to book and send off striker Robin van Persie for kicking the ball away after being flagged offside was something in the realm of nonsensical, but on the other, he's really not helping his cause at all with comments like this:
Arsene Wenger Describes UEFA As ‘Arrogant’ And A ‘Dictatorship’
When you have a football game of that stature, you cannot come out with decisions like that and show a lot of arrogance on top of that. We can all understand that we can make wrong decisions but, after that, it becomes dictatorship. It’s not common sense any more.
A bit more humility would do Uefa some good. To apologise for what happened would be much better than to charge people who have done nothing wrong. Uefa has to have a little bit [of a] low profile after what happened. That would be better, more sensible and more adapted to the situation.
Here’s the thing, Arsene - if UEFA really are a dictatorship, it’s probably best not to talk back to them or they’ll just hit you with even more punishment. And if they aren’t, well, you’ve just given them more ammunition to charge you with, making them look like even more of a dictatorship. Also, is there anything less humble than asking someone else to show more humility?
I understand that Wenger is angry (and in my opinion, he’s just trying to deflect attention away from his players after a fairly woefully performance in Spain), but he’s a smart enough man to know that this sort of thing isn’t going to get him anywhere. If he reacts this badly every single time UEFA smack him after he says something naughty, his ultimate punishment will probably be measured in ice ages.
