Louis van Gaal has been sacked by Bayern Munich with immediate effect, according to several reports. The Dutch manager, 59, was due to leave in the summer anyway after a disappointing season with the defending Bundesliga champions, and Bayern had already lined up Bayer Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes to replace him in the long term - which would mark Heynckes’ third spell with the club.
Bayern Munich Fire Louis Van Gaal With Immediate Effect
The timetable has been accelerated somewhat by the club, who find themselves well out of the title race in fourth place, 14 points behind Borussia Dortmund. They’re also out of the Champions League after failing to take advantage of a hugely weakened Inter Milan, and enough, apparently, was enough. Van Gaal is no longer being given the option to leave gracefully in summer, instead being forced out the door in the here and now. Assistant manager Andries Jonker will take the helm for the rest of the 2010/11 campaign before Heynckes takes over before next season.
