Aston Villa left it late but came up with an absolute huge win at Upton Park, doing the double over West Ham United and taking away three points to hurl themselves into an implausible ninth place in the table. West Ham took an early lead, and although a combination of poor refereeing and bad finishing kept Villa in trouble for some time, ace striker Darren Bent made the most of Mark Noble's mistake to fire the visitors level before half time.

From there, the game was a procession of wasted chances, with Bent and Ashley Young each coming close several times. James Collins had a header cleared off the line in the early stages of the second half and the Villans found Robert Green at the top of his game. The West Ham goalkeeper made several excellent saves to keep his side in the match, but just as everyone was resigning themselves to a draw, up popped substitute Gabriel Agbonlahor to nod home a cross by Young and send the elated Villans home with a 2-1 win.
