On the day after the brilliance of Schalke 04 and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was finally revealed to the followers of English football, the stopper - and rumoured target of Manchester United - has revealed that there was never any chance of him moving over to the Red Devils. Sir Alex Ferguson praised Neuer as putting in the best goalkeeping performance he'd ever seen from an opposition player in United's 2-0 victory over Schalke in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, but Neuer remained unmoved by the flattery:
Manuel Neuer: ‘No Chance’ Of Move To Manchester United
Of course it’s nice to hear things like that. But we have lost 2-0 and that irritates me very much. Manchester United was never an option for me. I will focus now on my performances and my team, all the other things don’t matter at the moment.
It’s been rumoured that a deal is in the works to take Neuer to Bayern Munich and the Allianz Arena, and that’s only been made stronger by Neuer’s denial of the possbility of a United move. For Ferguson’s part, his supposed interest in Atletico Madrid’s David de Gea as a replacement for the retiring Edwin van der Sar seems a lot more reasonable now.
