Steven Gerrard’s Groin Injury Reccurs; Will End His Season

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard had supposedly been on the verge of recovering from an injury which had kept him on the sidelines since early March, but a major setback has now ruled the England midfielder out for the rest of the season. Liverpool staff aren't entirely sure what the problem is, either: Gerrard was back in training last week but aggravated the problem last Friday and is now back to square one after a battery of medical tests could find nothing conclusive. With no reason to risk him further this year, Kenny Dalglish has opted to simply rest his skipper until the beginning of the next season, giving specialists time to figure out just what's wrong with him - and in the meantime he just has to get on with things:

It is a blow to anyone but it’s more disappointing for the player than it is for us, obviously.

We just have to get on with it and without being disrespectful to the players who are injured the most important ones are the ones who are fit.

They are the ones who can be chosen. At this particular moment in time I’m as good a player as Steven.

Gerrard joins a lengthening Liverpool injury list which includes first-choice England right back Glen Johnson, out until early May, and centre half Daniel Agger who has also been ruled out until the 2011/12 campaign with a knee injury. Liverpool are currently struggling to stay within touching distance of Tottenham Hotspur in the race for fifth, and a 2-1 reverse at West Bromwich Albion last weekend didn't help matters much there.
