There is still plenty of time for Cruz Azul to pull off their yearly choke job, but they’re starting to look more and more like a team that can shed that ‘chokers’ label. They defeated Monarcas Morelia by a score of 2-0 at Estadio Azul in the first leg of their Liguilla clash, and they look to be in a very good position to advance to the final, especially considering that Morelia’s home record is worse than their away record.
Cruz Azul Vs. Monarcas Morelia: 2-0 Full Time
Christian ‘Chaco’ Gimenez scored the opener, but he has the butterfingers of Morelia goalkeeper Federico Vilar to thank for his goal. In the 27th minute, Gimenez took a free kick from 25 yards away from goal. It was right into the middle of the goal and right into the hands of Vilar, but he mishandled the ball and it rolled into his net.
Emmanuel Villa scored the second goal just before the stroke of halftime, giving the Blue Machine an insurance policy headed into the second leg. He scored with a low shot to the far post from 15 yards away from goal, assisted by Gimenez, who continues to be Cruz Azul’s best player.
