With rumours that Aston Villa's first choice goalkeeper and American international Brad Friedel may be on his way out of the club for a backup role behind Pepe Reina at Anfield, Villa fans are left trying to make sense of what seems like on the face of things a bizarre situation. Why would Friedel reject a contract with the Midlands club just to sit on the bench with Kenny Dalglish?
Aston Villa Transfer Rumors: Why Would Brad Friedel Leave Villa Park?
Kirsten Schlewitz of SB Nation's superb Aston Villa blog 7500 to Holte thinks she may have an answer - it could be to do with the well-publicised financial issues that Friedel has found himself in recently. Playing time is all well and good, but if Liverpool are offering more money then he just might move on simply due to financial security. Or he could hate Vila's goalkeeping kits:
Apparently [the rationale behind the putative Liverpool move is] to have the security of a two year contract rather than wonder what will happen when you reach the age of 41 and no one wants you around. Friedel’s had a couple financial scares, so perhaps he’s thinking about the future. Or maybe he just really wanted to head to Liverpool, to get a taste of Champions League...oh wait, no, Europa League...no, not that either. Maybe he just wanted out of those hideous Nike goalkeeper kits.
The question of why Friedel would want to move to Anfield might be an interesting one, but it’s perhaps less of a mystery than why Liverpool would want him in the first place. What’s going on up there that makes them want to overpay for a backup goalkeeper?
