According to the Guardian, Lille forward Gervinho is a transfer target for both Liverpool and Arsenal this summer, with Arsene Wenger a noted fan of the Ivorian. Gervinho, 24, helped Lille to their first Ligue Un title in more than fifty years this season and has said he'd like to play in the Champions League in 2011/12, which seems to rule out Liverpool, who aren't going to have the opportunity to play European football at all after finishing sixth in the league. Arsenal, on the other hand, might have a shot at convincing him to sign.
Premier League Transfer Rumors: Arsenal, Liverpool Pursue Lille Forward Gervinho
With Gervinho expected to cost a significant sum of money, Arsenal may have to sell in order to acquire him, and one would have to imagine they’d rather end up with Lille teammate Eden Hazard instead (although Hazard would cost significantly more). We’ll see where all the Gervinho talk goes after he comes back from the Cote d’Ivoire’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in early June, but I can’t imagine there’s much to the rumour - he can play in the Champions League with Lille and they can probably do better to sell Hazard for significantly more money. But who knows?
