After 45 minutes of football in Queretaro, there’s been no change in the tie between Club America and Santos FC. Despite the fact that the “hosts” have had a ton of chances, including two specific instances where they absolutely should have scored, Santos still have a 1-0 aggregate lead, and the teams are tied up at 0-0 on the night. America are unlikely to find better chances than the ones they’ve already had, and as it stands, they’re going out of the 2011 Copa Libertadores.
Club America Vs. Santos FC, 2011 Copa Libertadores: Halftime, Santos Still Lead On Aggregate
The first big chance came in the 24th minute, off of a corner kick. Aquivaldo Mosquera elevated to meet the ball with his head and sent a powerful header into the post, which hit the inside of the upright, sending the ball into the stomach of Santos goalkeeper Rafael. He reacted late and didn’t corral the ball, allowing Vicente Vuoso an opportunity to finish the rebound. However, Vuoso put his shot into the side netting.
America had an even better chance in the 31st minute, and Vicente Sanchez is probably still wondering how he managed to avoid scoring. From the left flank, Daniel Montenegro laid a fantastic low cross across the six yard box, which beat Rafael and fell right into the path of Sanchez. The striker lunged at the ball but missed spectacularly, failing to hit the wide open net.
Not football related: There’s some serious shenanigans going on in the stands, dancing on the line between “crazy, passionate support” and “rioting.” We’ll let you know if anything serious comes out of that.
For now, the stewards have things under control and Santos still have a lead. America still have 45 minutes to score, but they’re likely to regret their two massive misses.
