Pumas UNAM are off to a fantastic start at home in their Liguilla second leg clash against Monterrey, as they lead 1-0 at halftime, but they still need one more goal if they want to advance to the semifinals of the competition. By virtue of being the higher seed, Pumas would advanced if the aggregate scored ended tied, but thanks to Monterrey’s 3-1 home win in the first leg of this tie, today’s hosts trail 3-2 on aggregate.
UNAM Pumas Vs. Monterrey, 2011 Liguilla: Pumas Lead 1-0, Trail 3-2 On Aggregate
Pumas are playing with a very aggressive 4-2-4 formation, which they have done before when they needed multiple goals, but it was not one of their forwards who scored the opening goal. Instead, it was defender Efran Velarde, who netted in the 5th minute with an absolutely spectacular diving header. Pumas have been on the attack for the entirety of the opening 45 minutes, but Jonathan Orozco and the Monterrey defense has been very good.
