French sport daily L'Equipe is reporting that Manchester United have made a bid of €10.5m for young RC Lens defender, Raphael Varane. The deal will also allegedly involve the player remaining at his club for the coming season.
Manchester United Transfer Rumors: Red Devils Bid For Varane
With United making a swoop for Blackburn Rovers' Phil Jones earlier, it was believed that the mooted deal for Varane, 18, would be cast into doubt. However, Sir Alex Ferguson's interest in the young centre-back, who can also operate in midfield, has not been assuaged. Despite his determination to land the player, with Jones, Smalling, and Evans all needing games and ready to fill in for the successful Ferdinand-Vidic partnership, Ferguson seems to have decided that the younger Varane would be better suited gaining experience in his homeland.
Varane is also taking a Baccalaureate at present, and sits his philosophy exam today. With that, and Phil Jones’ grammatically-correct tweeting, the IQ of United’s backline could be about to take a sharp increase - particularly if Ferdinand is injured.
