Tottenham Hotspur Transfer Rumors: Luka Modric Too Good For Spurs - Cartilage Free Captain

Luka Modric's announcement that he wants to leave Tottenham Hotspur came as a surprise to many and seem a little out of character for the shy midfielder, but he wouldn't exactly be alone in being a top-class player who wants Champions League football and is willing to look around to get it. It's not really an uncommon sentiment amongst footballers, and there's little doubt that many in Modric's place would look to be moving on.

At Cartilage Free Captain, SB Nation’s Tottenham Hotspur blog, Kevin McCauley agrees - even saying that he’d be doing the same thing if he were in Modric’s situation. Kevin doesn’t see much hope Tottenham can compete, which means they can’t offer Modric the kind of success (or wages), he might get at Stamford Bridge:

Luka Modric is too good for Tottenham Hotspur. Those words might sting some and seriously piss off others, but it’s true. We’re not finishing in the top four in the next couple of years unless Stan Kroenke is a melter, City’s owners pull out, or the Glazer family defaults on their loans. Modric wants to leave because he wants more money and he wants Champions League football. Who are we to stand in his way if an acceptable offer is received?

This sucks a lot. Losing your best player is always hard for a team. However, we have to accept the reality of our situation, get the most money possible for Modric, then use that money to help build a team that will be able to take advantage if one of the three above mentioned catastrophes takes place. Modric is probably about to be made very rich, then win a few trophies.

Although a move now seems inevitable, we'll have to see what happens. Chelsea and Spurs aren't anywhere close to agreeing a fee for Modric and the player will have to agree personal terms as well. But an idea that seemed far-fetched even a week ago is rapidly starting to come into fruition. Summer is crazy, eh?
