Chelsea FC Transfer Rumors: Luka Modric Fits Blues - We Ain’t Got No History

Following yesterday's little bombshell that Luka Modric is interested in leaving Tottenham Hotspur for Chelsea FC, a whole flurry of speculation and analysis popped up from Chelsea fans, Spurs fans and neutrals alike, many of which was very, very good.

Graham MacAree at SB Nation's Chelsea FC blog We Ain't Got No History has some thoughts on whether or not Modric would fit into the Chelsea team and the short answer is yes, he would. Whether or not he can permanently displace Frank Lampard or, in a change of strategy, Michael Essien remains to be seen, but Chelsea probably have some place for Modric.

My guess is that he'd fit best into a 4-2-3-1 system as a playmaker alongside Ramires in a double pivot, but that might all be moot if Chelsea make more signings as expected this summer. The places of Michael Essien, Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel are all under threat if this move goes through, for various reasons. Modric is clearly a first-choice player in this Chelsea midfield, though.

A double pivot of Modric and Ramires behind an advanced playmaker sure is an ambitious setup that lacks the defensive midfielder that has become such a staple of modern football, but at least that team wouldn’t be giving the ball away of they were ever able to obtain it in the first place. Modric would certainly be a positive addition to Chelsea, but the question still remains: Will he leave Spurs?

Daniel Levy has said that he's unwilling to consider any offers for Luka Modric and that he now considers this matter closed, but does anyone believe that for a second? Every player has a price as the sales of Fernando Torres and Cristiano Ronaldo show, and the price on Modric at which Levy can't say no has to be £50m - the price paid for Torres - or lower.
