The David de Gea transfer that was on then off then on then off looks like it was back on. The 20-year-old goalkeeper from Atletico Madrid underwent a medical at Manchester United on Monday and looks set to complete a transfer several months in the making for £18.9 million.
David De Gea Undergoes Medical At Manchester United
At last check, de Gea said that his transfer to Manchester United that the club confirmed back in May had not been finalized after months of speculation that he’d move to the Red Devils. de Gear said would not consider his future with United or any other club until after the European U-21 Championship. Now that the tournament is over, and de Gea has a winner’s medal after Spain won the title, de Gea is back to considering his future and his future appears to be Manchester United with the goalkeeper undergoing a medal in Manchester on Monday.
United has been in search of a goalkeeper ever since Edwin van der Sar announced that he would retire this summer. The club has Tomasz Kuszczak, Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos on their books, but neither has done anything to grab a hold of the number one keeper spot so Sir Alex Ferguson has been in search of someone in the transfer market to put between the sticks.
Having a young goalkeeper like de Gea start for one of the world's biggest clubs could be disconcerting for the Red Devils, but despite starring for Spain's youth teams,he also has 57 appearances for Atletico in Spain's La Liga so he does have experience. He's considered one of the world's top young keepers and has a big fan in Atletico teammate Diego Forlan, whose time with Manchester United went famously poor.
“There’s no doubt that David will become a very, very good player, because he has the talent.” Forlan said. “He is tall, strong on crosses, a good shot stopper and distributes the ball very well. I suppose he is similar to Van der Sar in a lot of ways. Even though he is very young, he gives a lot of confidence to his defenders and has a lot of talent.”
This continues United's summer spending with Ashley Young and Phil Jones already joining the club this summer. It also cements what is expected to be the key defensive triangle for the Red Devils with de Gea in goal and Jones and Nemanja Vidic in the center of defense.
