David De Gea Confirms Manchester United Transfer, Signs 5-Year Contract

Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea has moved from Atletico Madrid to Manchester United on a five-year contract, wrapping up what was quite possibly the most boring two-month transfer saga of all time. Before the transfer window even opened, it was common knowledge that de Gea was the man expected to replace the retiring (in both senses of the word) Edwin van der Sar, and now United have made it official for a fee believed to be worth around £18M, adding to the £32M already paid to Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa for Phil Jones and Ashley Young.

De Gea's a very promising goalkeeping prospect, and although his game needs polishing he has every hope of being a true long-term successor to van der Sar. The fact that he hasn't got a hope of dislodging Iker Casillas or Pepe Reina in the Spain heirarchy will only endear him further to Sir Alex Ferguson - although he was the starting keeper for Spain's under-21 European Championship win. Now that's been wrapped up, the move has been confimered, with de Gea understandably excited by the move to Old Trafford:

I feel very proud and I can’t wait to start playing here. When a club the size of Manchester United comes in for you it obviously makes you very, very happy. I saw their interest as an extra motivation to work even harder to show off my ability. It’s a great privilege to be part of a club like United and I’m keen to do my best and show what I can do.

He’ll be thrown straight into the frying pan as United defend their Premier League title. Will he succeed where so many have failed?
