In a move that is not the least bit surprising, Tottenham have rejected Luka Modric's transfer request. Despite receiving an initial bid of £22 million and then an improved bid of £27 million from Chelsea for the Croatian midfielder, Tottenham have insisted that they will not sell Modric at any price. Modric repeatedly saying that he would like to move to Stamford Bridge and handing in a transfer request clearly hasn't changed that.
Tottenham Rejects Luka Modric Transfer Request
“We know Luka wants to leave,” Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said. “Writing it down on a piece of paper doesn’t make much difference to our stance.”
Modric and Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy are in a showdown right now as Modric claims Levy promised him a year ago to consider any offers from bigger clubs. Levy isn’t doing that now, instead shooting down every offer that comes in. Modric went with Spurs on their preseason tour of South Africa and will continue to train and play with the team in preparation for the upcoming season, but that is hardly the end of Chelsea’s pursuit.
The question now is how badly does Chelsea want Modric? Tottenham say that they will not sell at any price, but that is unlikely. Will Chelsea up their bid to a number that forces Spurs to sell? Now that Michael Essien is out for six months with a knee injury the Blues might be willing to spend more on Modric, but Spurs still maintain that he will not be sold at all.
