Aston Villa may have lost Ashley Young, Brad Friedel and Stewart Downing, but they're by no means down and out yet. The £20M that Liverpool sent Birmingham's way for Downing will, apparently, soon be put to good use - Alex McLeish plans on snapping up Downing's replacement and a new goalkeeper with the funds. Specifically, he's chasing Manchester City number two Shay Given and Wigan's left-sided winger Charles N'Zogbia. According to Sky Sports, they've already put in a 10M bid for the latter, and they've been linked to Given for such a long time that we've seen several empires rise and fall during that particular pursuit.
Aston Villa Transfer Rumors: Team In For Charles N’Zogbia And Shay Given
Ultimately, if Villa can manage to get those two for not much more money than they’ve received for Downing, the team isn’t much worse (if at all) than where they left it at the start of summer. Considering that they still have the funds raised by Ashley Young’s sale to play with to reinforce the squad, that’s not such bad going.
