Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos has left Liverpool, the club has confirmed in a press release on Monday afternoon. Kyrgiakos, 32, joined the club from AEK Athens in 2009. He made a big impact upon signing with the Reds with a superb 2009/10 season, albeit with limited playing time, ultimately making 49 starts in a Liverpool shirt and scoring three goals, but the club's defensive depth has left him increasingly marginalised and unable to get onto the pitch on a consistent basis.
Sotirios Kyrgiakos Leaves Liverpool For Wolfsburg
Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos has left Liverpool after two seasons with the club.
Liverpool, one has to imagine, were happy to let Kyrgiakos go - they don’t really have any need of him. It’s been reported that the centre back is heading to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg to link up with Felix Magath, but the current indications are that he’s only on trial there. If he does end up in Germany, Wolfsburg will find themselves with a solid defender with an eye for the attack. In other words, it’s a win for everyone. Liverpool shed payroll for a player they have no need for, Wolfsburg get some help, and Kyrgiakos gets to play. It’s nice when things work out.
