After Liverpool confirmed centre back Sotirios Kyrgiakos' departure on Monday afternoon, it didn't take long for the Greek defender to latch onto a new club. The reason he asked to leave Anfield, of course, was because he had another team lined up, and that team, to the surprise of absolutely nobody, is Wolfsburg. Head coach Felix Magath responded to the signing on Wolfsburg's official website (translated from German through the magic of Google):
Sotirios Kyrgiakos Joins Wolfsburg
As our interior defense has not presented last stable, it was necessary to do anything here. Kyrgiakos is a player who will strengthen us immediately and can help. He is experienced, knows the Bundesliga and the rhythm and does not need time to adapt.
This will mark Kyrgiakos’ second stint in the Bundesliga - he spent two seasons with Eintracht Frankfurt between 2006 and 2008, where he made 58 appearances and scored eight goals. A solid performer with Liverpool, even if the playing time wasn’t there, Kyrgiakos will be hoping that he can replicate that form with Wolfsburg - and that he can get more time on the pitch.
