Villarreal Vs. Odense, UEFA Champions League: Yellow Submarine Go Through 3-1 On Aggregate

The opener was scored just five minutes into the second half and was netted by Rossi, tying up the series on aggregate. From that point on, Villarreal appeared much more loose and confident, having gotten the proverbial monkey off their back. Rossi added a second on a gorgeous assist by Cani in the 66th minute, giving Villarreal the lead. After that, things got a bit ugly.

Odense goalkeeper Stefan Wessels has been absolutely magnificent so far, keeping out everything that the Yellow Submarine have thrown at him. Though he hasn’t done anything particularly unbelievable, he’s been in perfect position for shot after shot, and a very average goalkeeper would not have clean sheet at the moment.

Even if 0-0 draws aren’t quite your cup of tea, just about anyone who likes football will be, at the very least, slightly amused by the way that Villarreal have come out playing. Their formation is a bit of an odd variation on a 3-4-3 that is not exactly symmetrical. In the second half, Juan Carlos Garrido will invent a new formation that features five wing backs or something along those lines.

No one is happy about the current strike in La Liga, but one could make the argument that it seriously benefited Villarreal this year. They will be much fresher on Tuesday night than they would have been if they were forced to play a league match over the weekend, which will help against a very fit Odense team that is currently a few games into their season and starting to find their form.

Villarreal kept the ball well and created shots in the first leg in Denmark, so it would be surprising if they didn’t at least make a game of it at the Madrigal. However, if Odense are able to score first, it could be lights out for the Yellow Submarine.
