Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund play the big time fixture of Matchday 4 later on this afternoon, but the Bundesliga’s morning fixtures offered up plenty of entertainment as a lead-in to the big show. Bayern Munich clinched a fairly easy three points, while Cologne and Hamburg played one of the most thrilling matches you’ll ever see.
German Bundesliga Matchday 4: Saturday Morning Wrap, Cologne Sinks Hamburg 4-3
Freiburg 3-0 Wolfsburg
Oh my, Felix Magath's boys really are a disaster, are they? Just a week after Simon Kjaer's woeful performance at the back against Borussia Mönchengladbach, the team weren't any better without the Dane on the pitch. Oliver Barth, Erik Jendrisek and Cedric Makiadi all scored a goal each, while star striker Papiss Demba Cisse somehow managed not to score despite creating a number of shots.
Hamburg SV 3-4 FC Köln
Talk about an absolute cracker. After an interesting but not particularly exceptional first half ended 1-1, the second half turned out to be absolutely mental. Milivoje Novakovic finished off a goal created by Lukas Podolski to start the second half, putting Cologne in the lead. It didn't take long for Hamburg to flip the script, as Slobodan Rajkovic and Heung-Min Son scored inthe 59th and 62nd minutes, giving Hamburg the lead. However, Cologne would have the last laugh with an 84th minute equalizer by Christian Clemens and an 88th minute winner Kevin McKenna, giving them a win and underachieving Hamburg another loss.
Kaiserslautern 0-3 Bayern Munich
Poor 'Lautern, they never had a chance. Despite his incredible inability to miss 12 sitters on random given days, this was one of those matches where Mario Gomez brought his shooting boots as he netted a hat trick. Lautern's Ivo Ilicevic saw red in the 90th minute. Easy as you like for the Bavarians.
FC Nürnberg 1-0 FC Augsburg
Alexander Esswein scored the winner for Nürnburg, but the real story here is that Augsburg couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. They’re going to have some trouble staying up this season.
Hoffenheim 1-2 Werder Bremen
Hey, perhaps Werder Bremen have decided to come back to the world of not being absolute rubbish. In all honesty, they were outplayed away to Hoffenheim today, but Tim Weise made a couple of good saves while Werder's forward players were just more clinical in front of the net. Roberto Firmino got Hoffenheim off to a great start with a nice goal in the 37th minute, but Marko Arnautovic answered instantly with a tap-in goal just a minute later. Markus Rosenberg, back from his exile in Spain, scored the winner in the 83rd minute. In case any Liverpool fans are wondering, Ryan Babel was pretty poor.
