Wayne Rooney was the man who made it happen, though, spotting the Portuguese's run down the right wing and threading a ball through the Bolton defence to find him. Converting from there was simplicity in itself, and it's 1-0 United.

Bolton aren't going to lie down and just take a beating, however, and the hosts have responded well, forcing United back into their own penalty box and Rooney into a critical block on his own goalline following a scramble that didn't see David de Gea looking particularly competent.
