Not even two months since being relieved of his duties as United States manager, Bob Bradley has found a new job. According to the Egypt FA, Bradley will travel to Cairo this weekend to finalize the details and put pen to paper on a contract that will make him Egypt's new national team manager.
Egypt FA Says Bob Bradley Will Take Over National Team Post
“All is good. Bradley will be here on Sunday to sign the contract,” EFA spokesman Azmy Megahed told the Associated Press.
Hassan Shehata stepped down as Egypt manager in June with the Pharaohs in the middle of a dreadful Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Egypt has already been eliminated from qualifying and will not take part in the competition for the first time in 33 years, ending their chances at winning a fourth straight Cup of Nations title.
As soon as Bradley was sacked by the U.S., his name was linked to the Egypt job. He was pegged as one of the favorites to take the job from the beginning and is now being handed the post. It will be his second national team job and the first time he has managed a team, club or country, outside of the United States.
It will be quite the task for Bradley to turn around a Pharaohs team that is aging and lacking in talent. While they have dominated the Cup of Nations, winning three straight titles, there isn’t much in the way of quality on the roster. Even those who are young enough to continue to make a positive contribution have been plagued by dust ups with managers and a poor attitude, making Bradley’s job that much harder.
The task Bradley is being handed is to qualify Egypt for the 2014 World Cup. The Pharaohs have only twice qualified for the tournament, the last time in 1990, but they do have a manageable qualifying group with Guinea, Zimbabwe and either Comoros or Mozambique joining them. They will have to finish first in their group to advance to a two-legged playoff for a spot in the World Cup.
