So maybe Barcelona wouldn't be too shaken by back-to-back draw after all? Sure, they were shocked by Sociedad and then by AC Milan in Champions League action, but it looks like all that did was make them angry and they took that anger out on poor Osasuna. Three goals by Lionel Messi, two by David Villa and one each by Cesc Fabregas and Xavi Hernandez, plus an own goals propelled Barcelona to a dominating 8-0 win in a match that felt like it was decided 10 minutes in.
Barcelona Vs. Osasuna, 2011 La Liga: Goals, Goals, Goals As Barca Win 8-0
For stretches of the match it looked like Barcelona weren’t playing against another team, but just out there knocking the ball around for fun. A long ball here, chested the ball down and flicking it around there. You know, just some guys having fun kicking the ball around. Only they were playing another La Liga team. This wasn’t a joke.
Sergio Busquets chipped the ball in for Dani Alves to run onto and Alves crossed perfectly for Messi to finish. It was 1-0 Barcelona and the match was one minute old. Thiago Alcantara played it in to Fabregas, who cheated the ball down for Messi. The Argentine played a great ball back to Fabregas and the Spaniard finished on the volley. It was 2-0 and only getting better.
By the time it was halftime, Barcelona led 5-0 and by the time 90 minutes were done they had eight goals. It was dominant and sublime. It was very much the work of a team that believes it is still the best in the world.
