You don't expect many 0-0 draws in the modern incarnation of the Serie A, especially when Napoli - and the attacking trident of Edinson Cavani, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marek Hamsik - are involved, but we got one today with the Partenopei and visiting Fiorentina looking curiously blunt going forward. It was an interesting tactical battle, with the guests looking to subvert Napoli's 3-4-2-1 formation at every opportunity, seeking especially to overload the right hand side where Andrea Dossena and Ignacio Fideleff had major problems in dealing with Alessio Cerci, who stayed wide to drag the entire Napoli shape out of position.
Napoli Vs. Fiorentina, 2011 Serie A: Tactical Battle Ends Goalless At Sao Paolo
All three members of the Napoli front line were far from at their best, and with Fiorentini never committing enough men forward for the home team to launch successful counterattacks, neither team really looked a good bet to win. That said, there were several good scoring chances for both sides, and Napoli had their fair share of penalty shouts turned down while the Viola forced goalkeeper Morgan de Sanctis into some very good saves. It wasn’t a boring 0-0, but it wasn’t an action-packed one, either. Instead, it was a fascinating tactical battle, and with Napoli more in need of points than their visitors, you’d have to say that Sinisa Mihajlovic won it.
