Looking at the score - 2-0 at halftime - it's easy to forget that Manchester City were at one point the side looking most dangerous in this match. They had a very good early chance through Edin Dzeko and a strong case for a penalty declined in the opening stages, but Bayern Munich's attack has since grown into the match and has been carving through City's defence like a heated knife through butter since about the thirty minute mark.
Bayern Munich Vs. Manchester City, 2011 UEFA Champions League: Hosts Lead 2-0 Thanks To Mario Gomez Brace
Mario Gomez has both goals, although he could hardly have asked for an easier task in converting either - both were tap-ins from rebounds, and Joe Hart can feel rightly aggrieved that his defenders aren't adequately supporting him. He's made three brilliant saves in this match, and the end result hasn't mattered. Twice he denied Bayern before Gael Clichy's indifference allowed Gomez to steal in and score from close range, and one obvious penalty later (it wasn't given) Gomez was at it again, tapping in again after Hart was forced into a good save from Daniel van Buyten following a free kick.
It’s not been City’s defence’s finest day in other words, and they’ve put themselves in a nearly impossible position at the Allianz Arena. If they can pull off a comeback here, it’ll go down in legends.
