Philadelphia Union Vs. DC United, 2011 MLS: Philly Bolsters Playoff Hopes With 3-2 Win

Sebastien Le Toux scored a pair of goals in the game's first 15 minutes and Michael Farfan scored the eventual game-winner in the 57th minute as the Philadelphia Union topped DC United 3-2 on Thursday to move into second place in the Eastern Conference. United could have moved into playoff position with a win, but as it is they remain a point behind the New York Red Bulls, while still having a game in hand.

The pair of goals give Le Toux 10 for the season, eight of which have come in his past seven games. He has also scored in three straight. Le Toux, who had just two goals in his first 26 games, is suddenly getting prominent mention as a MVP contender. He also has eight assists.

As good as Le Toux was, though, all three of the Union’s goals were pretty clearly on defensive breakdowns. Both of Le Toux’s goals came after he was able to get behind Union defenders. On Farfan’s goal, he was able to jump over an attempted tackle, take several uncontested dribbles and fired a shot from about 20 yards out when no United defender stepped up to stop him.

United were able to erase a 2-0 deficit on goals from Dwayne DeRosario and Andy Najar. But after DeRosario went out with an injury in the 62nd minute, they were far less dangerous on offense. They will next play the Columbus Crew on Sunday.
