Kyle Beckerman is not really known for his offensive prowess, but his strike from about 25 yards might just be one of the best goals scored this year. Beckerman's goal was his third of the season and gave Real Salt Lake an early 1-0 lead. RSL ultimately held on for a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union in a match both teams felt they needed to win.
Real Salt Lake Vs. Philadelphia Union: Kyle Beckerman Wonderstrike Leads Way
RSL entered the game having lost 4 of 6 and were in danger of losing all hope of climbing back into the Supporters' Shield race. The victory was their second straight, which equals their longest win streak since April 13, and leaves them nine points behind the Los Angeles Galaxy with a game in hand and nine matches left to play.
The Union have now gone winless in their past six and are suddenly just fighting to make the playoffs. They sit at 34 points, just two more than the currently 10th place New York Red Bulls and 11th place Portland Timbers.
In this one, the Union were badly outplayed and were probably somewhat lucky to only lose by one goal. Sebastien Le Toux did end his run-of-play goalless streak that had stretch back to last year, but his 30th minute score was essentially the Union's only highlight. Making matters worse, goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon was forced to leave at halftime with what was originally reported as a broken finger.
RSL out shot the Union 18-4, putting eight of their shots on frame. Chris Schuler's goal gave them a 2-0 lead and after LeToux's goal, were rarely in danger of losing that lead.
