Schalke vs. Mainz, 2012 DFB Pokal: Final score 1-2, Müller’s late goal secures quarterfinals
Schalke’s poor run of form to end the year continued on Tuesday, and Mainz beat them to move on to the DFB Pokal quarterfinals.
Mainz lost defender Radoslav Zabavnik after only ten minutes due to an injury, but they were the side to find the first goal. Adam Szalai played a great ball into Marco Caligiuri, and he beat Timo Hildebrand to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Schalke pushed back after halftime, and they found their equalizer in the 75th minute when Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored. The goal was a long time coming, and the supporters urged Schalke to push for another.
Mainz struck back for the winner just eight minutes later. Jan Kirchhoff sent a long ball into Nicolai Müller, and the forward finished to make it 2-1. Schalke threw everything forward in the dying minutes but were unable to find another equalizer with their final efforts not even testing Christian Wetklo.
