Karlsruher vs. Freiburg, 2012 DFB Pokal: Final score 0-1, Freiburg scores early and holds on late

Jonathan Schmid scored in the second minute, and Freiburg held on against a late Karlsruher rally.

Freiburg grabbed a goal in the second minute of the match and held on for 88 minutes to beat 3.Liga side Karlsruher 1-0.

Karlsruher never had the chance to get their feet underneath them against the Bundesliga side. Jan Rosenthal played a ball behind the backline to Jonathan Schmid, and the forward nutmegged Dirk Orlishausen for the goal after only two minutes to give Freiburg the lead.

The hosts came out immediately seeking an equalizer, but Oliver Baumann was up for the challenge. He made a save on a header by Daniel Gordon. Then, Rouwen Hennings was one-on-one with Baumann, and the goalkeeper forced him wide where Hennings shot into the side netting.

Freiburg began to control proceedings, but that didn’t stop Karlsruher from takings shots at the goal and consistently testing Baumann. As the match wound down in the second half and Karlsruher threw numbers forward looking for a goal, Baumann was big denying Hennings twice in the dying seconds.
