Southampton and Sunderland played their relegation six-pointer while lots of very good teams were playing, and we hope for your sake that you chose to watch one of those other games. Basically everything about the game was poor except for Steven Fletcher's movement and finish on the game's only goal, which helped Sunderland to a 1-0 victory.
Southampton vs. Sunderland: Final score 0-1 in a dour affair
Ick.
Stephane Sessegnon will get credit for the assist on the winning goal, though it's not entirely clear how much intent he had to create anything dangerous for Fletcher. He took what appeared to be a less than spectacular shot that took a slight deflection into the path of Fletcher, who finished well.
Almost everything else about the game was bad, which shouldn't be shocking to anyone. Sunderland have performed below expectations this year, Southampton just aren't that good, and Martin O'Neill likes to sit on 1-0 leads. The Black Cats are now out of immediate relegation danger, but might slip again when they start playing opponents who know how to defend.
