In the 58th minute of the international friendly match between England and the Netherlands at Wembley Stadium, England defender Chris Smalling and Holland striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar knocked heads as the two went up for a ball in the air. Huntelaar won the ball and scored a goal, but that was the least of everyone's concerns the second the ball hit the back of the net. Both players went down, and both had to be substituted out of the game.
Chris Smalling Injury: Defender Taken To Hospital After Collision
Huntelaar left under his own power, but Smalling had to be taken off via a stretcher. He cut his head open and was bleeding profusely. Additionally, he appeared to briefly go unconscious. Though he was conscious as he left the field, there will be concerns about a head injury beyond the cut.
Following the match England interim manager Stuart Pearce confirmed that Smalling had been taken to the hospital, but did not elaborate. It is not yet known if he merely needed stitches or if he suffered a concussion when he knocked heads with Huntelaar.
