Borussia Dortmund will meet the winner of Wednesday’s Bayern Munich - Borussia Mönchengladbach match in the final of the DFB-Pokal. It appeared for most of their match against SpVgg Greuther Fürth that they would be required to go to penalties to advance, but Ilkay Gündogan scored an improbable winner at the death to send Der BVB through with a 1-0 victory after extra time.

A scoreless first 90 minutes sent the match to extra time, and in that 30-minute extra period, Fürth were the surprisingly more ambitious side. Both Max Grün and Roman Weidenfeller were forced into multiple difficult saves throughout the match, and it was extremely entertaining for a 0-0 draw.
In the 118th minute, Fürth made the unorthodox decision to pull Grün and sub in a penalty-kick specialist, Jasmin Fejzic. That substitution would ultimately backfire. Before the match had a chance to go to penalties, Gündogan struck a shot from 20 yards out that hit Fejzic’s near post, but he was late in diving for the ball. Gündogan’s shot came off the post, then off of Fejzic’s back before bouncing into the back of the net.
The shot turned out to be the last kick of the game. A heartbroken Fürth side will now focus on winning promotion to the Bundesliga, while Dortmund awaits their final opponent.
