Piermario Morosini Dies Following Heart Attack On Pitch

25-year-old Livorno midfielder has died following a cardiac arrest during a match at Pescara. All planned matches in Italy on the weekend have been suspended as a result.

Some shocking news out of the Serie B on Saturday as Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini has died following a heart attack that occured during his team’s match against Pescara. The 25-year-old collapsed on the pitch half an hour into the game, which was quickly abandoned as Morosini was rushed to the hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival, and all of today’s matches in Italy have been suspended as a mark of respect.

Reports are swirling that the ambulance that was arriving to treat the stricken Morosini was blocked off by another vehicle as it tried to enter the stadium, but details are currently unclear. Morosini received urgent medical treatment, including defibrillation, on the pitch, and was conscious as he was stretchered off, according to Pescara general manager Danilo Iannascoli:

Morosini collapsed, he tried to get back up but then collapsed again. He looked at me in the eyes when he was taken into the ambulance. We are living through a drama.

It's a tragic loss and the second such incident in less than a month following Fabrice Muamba's collapse during Bolton Wanderers FA Cup match against Tottenham Hotspur in March. Muamba, who was described as 'effectively dead for 76 minutes', was lucky to survive and is expected to recover.
